The sad thing is that hard drive failure is a reality for a great many computer users out there. All hard drives have an expiration date. Even if you’ve had your hard drive for a considerable length of time, there may come a time when it will fail suddenly, resulting in the loss of all your data. Thus, it’s very important that you do your utmost to protect your system from hard drive failure. But before you can do that, you will first need to be able to detect the signs of a hard drive that is about to fail, then know what to do next in order to prevent it from completely dying.

Let’s say for the past couple of weeks your hard drive has been grinding and clicking, and now the noises its making have become even more pronounced. This is a good sign that your hard drive is about to fail. The reality is that most strange sounds that you hear from a hard drive are typically good signs of possible failure. If you start to hear any of these sounds, the first thing you should do is backup all the important data on the drive. If your operating system is running on that hard drive, then you may want to make a copy the contents of that hard drive to a new one, in order to prevent any future headaches.

Of all the things that you can do, one thing that you must not do is attempt to fix the issue by yourself. There are some people that thing that if they open up the hard drive they may be able to fix what’s wrong with it. This is especially the train of thought for hard drives that are relatively new, as they struggle to come to terms with the reality. But the reality is that, the moment you open up the hard drive, you’ve taken a particularly bad situation and made it significantly worse. Hard drives are assembled in special clean rooms, as they are highly susceptible to damage from even the smallest particles. Opening up the hard drive is simply asking for trouble.

If you have been responsible enough to regularly back up your hard drive, then you should have very little to worry about, as all you will need to do is purchase a new hard drive and copy the backup data to it. However, if you’ve never backed up your hard drive, it’s still not cause to panic, as you can contact a specialist that will be able to recover the contents of your hard drive, in the event that it fails. However, this process is takes a considerable length of time to complete and its relatively expensive. The whole process is carried out in a clean room, with special tools, and highly qualified personnel. And in most cases they may not be able to recover all the data on the drive.

Stay away from any home remedies that you’ve read for fixing failed hard drives. Whatever you do, do not put your hard drive in the refrigerator. These supposed fixes are all untrue and are likely to cause more problems for you. If you’re unable to get the drive working, then your only solution will be to send it in to a specialist. While it may not be the most favoured option, it’s the only viable one. The unfortunate thing about it is that you will never be able to use the drive again. But in many cases, having to pay a hefty sum to retrieve the data on your drive is more than worth it. Old pictures and emails from close relatives and friends are priceless. However, you want to avoid this from ever happening, which can be done by taking the proper precautions.
